I have long believed that EVERYONE can benefit from Yoga. It has many parts, the Breath, the Movement, the Relaxation. We can benefit from one or more of these facets.
Yoga can be a lot of fun. It is not necessarily precise, it can be about making shapes, not perfect postures.
I have taught yoga to children in schools and at groups such as Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides for a number of years.
Children enjoy the freedom to stretch, bend and use their imagination.
They like the slight craziness of how they breathe. Some children love the Relaxation, being still with their eyes closed. Others find lying still very difficult but feel the benefit of just a few minutes of stillness.
I have been working with children with SEPN, for the past year. They are all unique and special with individual needs, likes and dislikes. They love yoga for all the same reasons as children I have worked with in the past. However, these children can sometimes have a greater need to improve body awareness, co ordination, focus, self esteem and relaxation.
I have been working particularly with children with Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, ASD, and Downs Syndrome. They have an age range of 7-15years.
I have enjoyed working with these children and teachers, but I think it is helpful to hear what they think about doing Yoga at school.
